Last week Coco was on vacation from boarding school so I took her to Los Angeles to visit friends and get a dose of culture completely different from the English countryside. Hands down the highlight for me was visiting The Broad, LA’s brand new and very impressive contemporary art museum. While I so enjoyed seeing the art – especially this installation called, “The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away,” by Yayoi Kusama – what gave me the most pleasure was how much 14-year-old Coco enjoyed it too. From the obvious things that kids usually like, such as the Jeff Koons balloon puppy and Takashi Murakami’s Kid Robot-like sculptures, to the more obscure like a turquoise Cy Twombly and even the architecture of the building’s escalator, Coco was snapping away pictures on her phone and taking notes for her art class at school. If you’re anywhere near LA, I implore you to plan a visit. And bring the kids!
